Collages are one of the most used images in social media marketing. They consist of photos or pictures that are placed together to form a single image.

It isn't just because collages aesthetically pleasing; it is because they work!  According to an experiment done by Buzzsumo, images with people receive 94% more engagement than those without people.   Images containing women receive 98% more engagements than those containing men. Instagram feed wallpapers consisting of at least one vertical photo received 35% more likes and 33% more comments than those containing horizontal photos.

Did you know that it has been scientifically proven that colleges increase website traffic? A study done by the University of Portsmouth revealed that colleges directly increased website traffic. They found that web pages containing collages had an increase in online sales.

Collages are not only great for social media marketing, but they're crucial for websites too! One company saw their search engine ranking improve by 870% after their recent website redesign which included the use of collage photos.

So does use collage photos help all types of content marketers? The research shows it does. However, there is something you must do to make sure your business gets maximum results from its usage. You can't just post any old college; you need to be strategic about it. There's a right way and a wrong way to do things.

Here are 3 easy steps to create visually appealing collages that will boost your business's online presence:

1. Pick Photos with Common Features

It isn't enough to simply have different photos in your collage; they must have something in common with each other.  Let's say, for example, you're an office supply company like Staples. If you use professional-looking people (and preferably some kids) on your collage photo then it is likely that customers will associate those smiling faces with their positive experiences at Staples stores or on staples.com. That subconscious connection leads them to think of your business whenever they need to buy office supplies.

2. Make Sure Photos are the Same Size and Orientation

Ideally, collages should be consistent in two ways: size and orientation.  In order for there to be a cohesive feeling between all of the photos, it is recommended that you use the same dimensions for your collage images as well as ensure that they're oriented similarly. Generally speaking, if one photo is vertical then all of them should be vertical, or vice versa with horizontal photos.

3. Try to Include Faces as Much as Possible

As mentioned earlier, human faces capture attention more than other elements on an image so your goal should be to place as many people as possible within your collages! If you don't have any available, try to include some other objects like plants or animals.

So what do you think? I'm not much of a graphic designer (some might even say I lack artistic ability); however, I like to think that when given time to work with something I can create a reputable item. I can't wait to try out some of these tips to see how they work!

When creating a collage on Instagram or Pinterest, remember to keep it consistent with the photo style and orientation you choose across all platforms so there's no confusion with how your audience thinks about your brand; consistency breeds engagement over time, after all. If you want to add your own photos, try to add faces (or other human elements) in as many of them as possible. And lastly, make sure all the images you use are sized and aligned similarly; it'll help give a cohesive feeling between subjects and create a more visually appealing collage.
